NIRSPEC Calibrations

Exposure Times, Line Lists, and Standard Stars

  • Lamp Exposures
    • Flat: Lamp controller now allows variable brightness. The command "flat on" will attempt to give 10,000 DN/sec in at least one order displayed for your filter, slit, and resolution choice. Note that some AO modes may not attain this flux.
    • Arcs: We recommend 1.5 seconds (min. possible) with 5-10 coadds for all modes
    • Old Lamp Exposures: For completeness
  • Lamp and Sky Line Lists
Line lists of calibration lamps and OH sky emission lines.
  • Photometric standards
Lists of near-IR JHKLM standards, from UKIRT, IRTF, HST, and others.
  • Telluric standards
Finding Appropriate Telluric Standard Stars in desired parts of the sky.

How to take internal calibrations

  • Use a "Lamps Only" script from the EFS GUI:
The exposure time and coadds chosen by the EFS will give a peak of 10,000 DN per flat divided into 3 coadds (3300 DN/coadd).
    1. Select "Lamps Only" from the "Obs Mode" pull-down on the EFS
    2. Select your desired filter, slit, echelle angle and cross disperser angle (Note that the "Nod Pattern" is ignored)
    3. Click "GO"
For low-res, 4 files are saved in the following sequence:
      1. flat lamp on
      2. flat lamp off
      3. neon lamp on
      4. argon lamp on
For high-res you will get one less arc frame (3 files total):
      1. flat lamp on
      2. flat lamp off
      3. neon + argon + krypton + xenon lamps on
  • Use the Calibration Acquisition Tool (CAT)
There are two ways to use the CAT:
    1. Set the exposure level (total counts) per flat field
      1. Setup NIRSPEC using a "Setup Only" script from the EFS
      2. Click on "Counts"
      3. Enter the number of darks (i.e. lamps off) and flats (i.e. lamps on) frames that you want
      4. Enter the counts (total ADU) that you want per flat. Do not worry about persistence as the CAT will simply add coadds to attain your desired count level.
      5. Select which arc lamps you want
      6. Enter the integration time and coadds for each arc frame (we recommend 1.5 seconds with 10 coadds)
      7. Click "GO"
    2. Set your own integration time and coadds
(N.B. The flat lamp will give about 10,000 DN/sec in most modes)
      1. Setup NIRSPEC using a "Setup Only" script from the EFS
      2. Click on "Exp. Time"
      3. Enter the number of darks (lamps off) and flats (lamps on) frames that you want
      4. Enter the integration time and coadds for each flat/dark frame (1.5 sec is minimum)
      5. Select which arc lamps you want
      6. Enter the integration time and coadds for each arc frame (we recommend 1.5 seconds with 10 coadds)
      7. Click "GO"
