Operating Examples

11.1. CuAr Calibration

Here is an example of step-by-step instructions for obtaining a wavelength calibration spectrum in the echelle mode.

  1. Start the ESI software.

  2. On the GUI, select Echelle mode, the slit width of choice, and Clear_S in the lower filter wheel. Select Full Frame readout from the QuickFrame button. (Alternatively load the setup file for the echelle slit of your choice.)

  3. Select the CuAr lamp from either the menu or the arc lamp panel. (Remember to hit "Move" if you use the menu.)

  4. Make sure the hatch is closed, and set the exposure time in the ``CCD'' panel to 300 seconds. (With the hatch closed and a lamp on, a red beam will run from the hatch all the way to the CCD panel in the GUI.)

  5. Click ``Move'' to set the stages, and ``UpdateCCD'' to set the CCD parameters.

  6. Enter the object name annd click the ``Expose'' button.

11.2. Obtaining a Target Spectrum in the Echelle Mode

  1. Start the ESI software.

  2. Select Observing Mode of Echelle, Clear_S for the lower wheel, and your slit width from the Slit panel. Select Full Frame readout from the QuickFrame button. (Alternatively, load the setup file appropriate for the echelle slit of your choice.)

  3. Make sure the hatch cover is open, and enter your desired exposure time. (A blue beam should now be visible in the GUI.)

  4. Click ``Move'' and ``UpdateCCD''.

  5. Enter the object name and click the Expose button.
