UNABLE TO READ STATUS FROM ESI CCD CRATE

If you get the following email warning (possibly after either the K2 terminal server, kanaha, or koki gets rebooted):

unable to read status from ESI CCD controller crate

reboot the CCD crate

There is a problem that Bob Kibrick noted where extra characters are going out to the ccd crate from the K2 terminal server and the crate doesn't boot correctly. See The ESI Dispatchers and Galil Controllers for more information.

Subject: unable to read status from ESI CCD controller crate
Content-Length: 1720

The ESI dewar status monitor task "dewar.watch" running on the Ultra-2
workstation "kanaha" under the account "esieng" was unable to read the
ESI dewar status from the ESI CCD VME crate "esi5cb".

Please check the following possible causes of this failure, and insure that
it is corrected as soon as possible. Failure to do so may result in the
ESI dewar warming up and needing to be re-pumped, which may require removal
of the dewar from the instrument. Also, an uncontrolled warmup risks
contamination of the CCD should impurities in the dewar condense onto
the surface of the CCD.

Possible causes of failure to read ESI dewar status:

1. The ESI CCD VME crate "esi5cb" (located in the Keck-2 computer room)
has either lost 110-volt power or crashed, and needs to be re-powered
   and/or rebooted.

2. The ESI Leach-2 CCD controller chassis (located in the ESI instrument)
has either lost 110-volt power or crashed, and needs to be re-powered
   and/or rebooted.

3. The ESI private ethernet has been interrupted or improperly terminated:

	A. broken or disconnected coaxial cable within computer room or
between computer room and the instrument

	B. broken or disconnected 50-ohm terminator at either end of network

	C. loss of 110-volt power to the Cisco 10/100 twisted-pair ethernet
switch located on the top shelf of the ESI rack in the Keck-2
	   computer room.

4. Someone has incorrectly edited the /kroot/data/music/services file on
"kanaha" so that it is no longer referencing the correct "traffic" host.

This message has been automatically sent by the "dewar.watch" cron process
running on "kanaha", and will be re-sent at 10 minute intervals until this
situation has been corrected.
