DEIMOS Plotmask Widget

Background

Given a DEIMOS image acquired with a mask in place, the DEIMOS Plotmask widget allows observers to generate plots of their slitmasks annotated with selected information on the targets assigned to each slit. This is useful for determining which slits in the spectra correspond to which targets.

Invocation

To launch the widget from the DEIMOS background menu, select DEIMOS Utilities > DEIMOS Plotmask Widget. After a few seconds, the IDL Virtual Machine banner will appear. Click this, and the widget will run.

Usage

Click File > Open to launch the file chooser. Navigate to the directory with the DEIMOS images and select an image to plot it.

Controls

Show name

Toggle displaying the target name above the slit.

Show index

Toggle displaying the slit number below the slit.

File Options

Open
Select a DEIMOS image from which to read the slitmask data.
Print (Letter-size)
Generate a hardcopy of the current plot sized for letter paper, or save same to a Postscript file.
Print (B-size)
Generate a hardcopy of the current plot sized for B-size paper, or save same to a Postscript file.
Quit
Exit the application.

Distribution

Please click here to obtain a copy of the DEIMOS plotmask widget in a binary format compatible with IDL and the free IDL Virtual Machine (VM). With either IDL or the VM, you can run the widget at your home institution as follows:
  • Create a directory in which to store the source files.
  • Change to that directory.
  • Unpack the distribution into the source directory via:
    	gtar xvzf plotmask.tgz
  • If needed, reset the value of IDL_PATH:
    	setenv IDL_PATH "<IDL_DEFAULT>"
  • Execute the software via:
    	idl -vm=plotmask_gui.sav
    and click on the splash screen when it starts up.
