1. Outrigger Telescopes
% Complete by earned value remains at 98%.
OT1 has been shipped to Mount Stromlo. There was minor corrosion damage to
the base of OT1 when it got wet from rain. EOS is correcting the damage. The
base was installed in June and the Yoke will be installed on July 9th. OT1
optics are planned to ship by air on July 3rd.
OT2 is in Tucson storage.
OT3 FAT complete except for emissivity and pivot point testing.
OT4 WFE and tracking tests are ongoing. FAT is ongoing at the time of this
report.
Pivot point testing for both OT3 and OT4 is scheduled for the week of August
11th.
CARA/JPL I&T is scheduled for the week of August 18th. At this time a interface
check of the DSM is the only task planned.
2. Outrigger Enclosures and Site Work Preparation
% complete by earned value remains at 98%.
Preship Review scheduled for July 10th.
Replacement of fire damaged E1 parts is ongoing.
PO for enclosures, vacuum light pipes and retained formwork storage was issued
this month. Investigation of alternative storage sites in Australia is ongoing.
3. Outrigger Telescope Site Work
Planned start date of January 2004 is dependant on outguide funding. Inguide
funding has sitework starting FY 2005.
If it is decided to complete OT5 & OT6 sitework at the same time as the
other 4 with a January 2004 start date, the fabrication of the retained formwork
is now on the critical path. Note that the cost of this contract option (valid
to 10 April 2002) has increased from $300,000 to $324,000 due to supplier cost
increases and exchange rate variations.
On June 26th the BLNR held a hearing to hear oral arguments of the petitioner’s
and UH’s objections to the hearing officers FOF/COL and standard and
special conditions for the permit. It is expected that the board will issue
a ruling in the next few weeks.
Mount Stromlo testing.
CARA staff (R. Johnston & J. Bell) will visit the site between July 7th
through 15th. The retained formwork, vacuum system components will also be
inspected. We will witness the installation of the telescope yoke on July 9th.
This will be the first opportunity to see the dome and telescope operate as
a system.
4. Basement Preparation & Installation
Additional photo-documenting of existing basement beamtrain hardware.
R. Ligon (JPL) began working on infrastructure for secondary beamtrain (FDL
metrology, FATCAT beam combiner, etc). Secondary beamtrain will use 2 previously
unused fibers on the FATCAT camera.
R. Ligon (JPL) performed FATCAT camera upgrade for secondary beamline and other
functions including H-band filter, wl and spec channel prisms, and additional
chip coverage of images. Dewar was warmed and opened for this work, then pumped,
cooled, and retested afterwards.
Good progress being made on the vacuum delay line install preparations.
5. Coude & Dual Star Module
ZnSe windows installed in the secondary beam path.
6. Siderostats
Completed student spooling, packaging, and inventory of sid telescope control
cabling removed from summit.
7. Keck AO
Good progress on resolving the K1 wavefront controller upgrade issues including
reconstructor file loading and data bursting. Testing planned for early July.
The installation of clean room partitions has begun in the AO enclosures. Ladder
installation to allow access to electronics rooms is complete.
A report was issued on attempts to understand the changing astigmatism from
the K2 AO system; several potential sources were found not guilty.
The K2 AO server port to a faster machine has begun.
8. Motion Control
M9,M11,M14 transport optic AZ flexures modified to bolt to the transport optic
framework.
Changed 850G transport optic homing algorithm to omit initial slew to NEG limit;
homes directly off POS limit now.
Re-aligned M9 thru M14 transport optics so that boresite laser, and M7/M9 LED's
stay aligned to M8 target (boresite laser) or AA cam (LED's) over full 35m
travel of LDL carts. This required changing actuator travel ranges and/or adjusting
transport optics at several locations.
In prep for LDL automated beamline survey, calculated new PMAC home offsets
and sw limits changes for INIT of M9 and M11 actuators for aligned M7/M9 LED's
at LDL= 0m,0m (front) and FDL = back.
Successful completion of LDL beamline survey of full 35m of LDL track with
lookup table for aligned M9, M11 actuator positions versus LDL cart position
determined from testing with flip-in M7,M9 LED's and AA camera centroids.
9. Software Infrastructure
Auto acquisition
Broke out the utilities used by dsrv to write the fits files into a library.
Modified fsrv to have FWHM and SNR threshold keywords so that it could decide
based on these values if it successfully centroided. If not, it could use the
utilities to write the fits file for later analysis. Successfully tested dsrv
with the new library.
Tested above library with fsrv but it would write a fits file successfully
only once per startup. After a day of playing with it, couldn't make it happy.
Kept the utilities in a library, but took out the changes in fsrv to write
the file. Need to revisit this later.
Tested new centroid8 algorithm with all fits files captured during IF and AO
nights. It produced a good fwhm value for almost every fits file we have -
even the ones that don't even have a good star. It is now the algorithm of
choice and will be used for the upcoming run.
Autoaligner
New framegrabber software fully integrated into system but is failing when
invoked and is currently under investigation.
Beamtrain autoaligner process documented and design currently underway.
IF sequencer
Separate thread created (a state machine) working but the monitoring and callbacks
aren't in yet.
Configuration management
Evaluating and updating prototype ECR system.

Tornado 2.2 done

13. Miscellaneous
Vibration reduction:
Perf 11 - K2 instrument glycol isolation skid (April-July 03). There are technical
issues delaying this implementation. Will be further delayed and not be addressed
this FY. Facilities will complete this job at the beginning of FY'04 (Oct timeframe)
with their funds.
Perf 12 - Measure fan balance (May-July 03). Job still postponed as test results
indicated little urgency for required mitigation. Unless additional testing
is warranted, may be taken off the list.
Perf 13 - NIRSPEC parking position mod (Oct-May 03). No work being done here.
This is still on hold pending budget evaluations (note: design is complete,
lacking procurement/easy installation).
Ops 21 - Vibration review part of ECR process (Mar 03 - May 04). Processes
and personnel have been decided. This is being integrated into the ME/FE ECO
process. Observatory-wide integration still in embryonic stage, so for a while "bad" vibration
installations may still slip through. However, overall awareness of the need
for reviews is growing.
Ops 23 - Isolate air conditioners (Mar - Oct 03). Reset focus to now address
IF AC instead of K2 Computer Room AC. Reevaluated implementation strategy.
Replacement spring isolators have been procured. Pretty much ready to go, but
October due date may be at risk depending on progress.
Testing. Ran facility glycol loop test during May run. No obvious correlation
between pump/motor and 29 Hz vibration. Next steps to be decided.
Handovers:
V2 Operational Readiness Review + pre-nulling & DP tasks:
The CARA task spreadsheet through CY04 in support of the V2 ORR, pre-nulling
and pre-DP is attached. This spreadsheet has been updated with status from
June.
FDL subsystem:
Received and reviewed FDL RTC Software Developer's Guide and GUI document.
The FDL software is currently being updated and as such we will not take ownership
until all updates are fully tested and run operationally and fully documented.
Engineering observing
No observing run in June.
The July run punchlist items are attached.
14. Management Items
John Gathright has assumed the new position of "Interferometer Operations
Coordinator". He will also now be the CARA representative at the shared
risk science telecons.
