Keck I Engineering plan
Split night:
- 1st half HIRES science (Chaffee PI),
- 2nd half Pointing test T920b
"Wayne Dahl is planning to come in to his office whenever Terry S. (OA) finishes
the first pointing test (~2 AM), generate a new pointing model using those
data, and have Terry take as much of another pointing test as he can for the
rest of the night. So far as we know, this will be the first time a new pointing
model has been tested *immediately* after it was generated" - F. Chaffee
Below is an email from Kyle K. with TPTT plans for addressing the K1 pointing
problems
The TPTT
formulated the following plan today to address the recurring K1 telescope
pointing problems:
Wayne Dahl (WD) was tasked to mathematically model Ron Quick's pointing model
correction recommendations and upload the new correction algorithm for
tonight's observing. WD concluded that adding this correction algorithm (derived
over
only 1/4 of the sky) will not improve telescope pointing over the entire
sky (it actually makes it worse). See correspondence from WD dated 6/16/03
(utilizes
the new correction algorithm on data collected on a complete 3/15/03 pointing
test). The following engineering plan was formulated based on these conclusions:
- Date: Monday, 16 June 2003
Configuration: f/15 + tertiary,
Hires Guider / Star Stacking Camera SSC
- T920B Pointing test, guider or SSC 4.5 hours
W. Dahl
- Wayne Dahl is planning to come in to his office whenever the OA (Terry
S.) finishes the first pointing test (~2 AM), generate a new pointing model
using
those data, and have Terry take as much of another pointing test as he
can for the rest of the night. So far as we know, this will be the first
time a
new pointing model has been tested *immediately* after it was generated.
- WD will analyze the results of both pointing tests and will upload this
resulting correction algorithm for the second half of Thursday evening
when another pointing
test is desired.
Randy, please schedule the pointing test.
- WD will analyze the results of Thursday's pointing test and will upload
this resulting correction algorithm for Friday's observing program.
- The
TPTT will want immediate feedback from the observer and observing staff
after the Friday run for corrective action planning on Monday morning.
- For the record, replacement of Az. encoder #1 improved the Az encoder
#1 performance by a factor of 8 (both encoders now showing 5 arc sec
repeatability).
Due to
these results, no immediate repair work on the Az encoders is currently
planned. Documentation for future repairs will be completed in the
next week or so.
- Bob Moskitis and Tom Nordin will plan a troubleshooting effort for
the elevation encoder performance this week and coordinate this with
the
TPTT prior to scheduling.
K3 (Kyle K.) will continue to lead the coordination efforts on this
project until further notice.
