Engineering Plan LRIS Oct.3, 2003

Afternoon Calibrations

1)                Focus Sequences on the dome on all available filters for all dichroic combinations

2)                Arcs for all gratings and grisms - 1 frame each.

3)                Imaging flat fields with all filters – 3 exposures each:

4)        Spectroscopic flat fields – all available filters, 3 exposures each.

5)        Transfer curve data for red and blue side

After Sunset (> 18:19)

1)     Focus procedure on sky to measure dome vs. sly focus-offset correction.

2)                Flat fields to measure transfer function for both red and blue side for all amplifiers.

3)     If time allows: sky flat fields for available filters.

Night after Twilight Ends @19:22

1)                Define new pointing origin for MIRA (MIRA red and blue) and for Blue imaging (LRISB)

Pointing origins test

2)                Check P.O and measure their coordinates on detector

3)        Pickoff mirror slitmask alignment

q    Align Illingworth’s mask – check with written procedure

q    Test Rotation vs. guiding – Estimated time 0.5 hours

Is it still true that small rotator moves cannot be done while guiding? Quantify “small”.

4)        Mira test 1 - 2 hours

Commission the new red&blue Mira procedure:

5)        Zeropoints –. Measure zeropoints for all available filter configurations

Zeropoints to be measured in 3 different ways:

a.    bxy 5 (or 9) on detector

b.    PMFM= 500, 750 ,1000 (2, 3 on detector)

c.    PMFM=100 (bxy 5)

6)        Plate scale measurement: use known binary system and

q    take exposure on bxy9 pattern, both red and blue.

q    Take exposure in area where Mira pointing origin is

7)        Spectroscopic throughput for various instrument setups –

8)        Pointing test – 90 minutes – 4 a.m.

If time available:

q    Measurement of flexures on red and blue arm - Estimated time 1-2 hour : measurement of instrument flexure vs. elevation, rotation in imaging mode with multi-holes mask. Measure of spectroscopic shifts vs. rotation and elevation

q    Extinction curve.

                                                     i.      Standard star at different elevations

Dawn Starts @5:00- Till sunrise

12 degrees begins 5:26

1) More focus and/or flat fields for various instrument setups if needed.
