I’m sure I am doing this at a time that is out of the regular sequence, but I’m new here and still learning the ropes.  Anyhow, I’m interested in obtaining some engineering time in Keck 1.  Below are the items of interest to the E-TAC.

  2. Purpose of Test: General Telescope Engineering
  3. Test Number:

    2. ECR-91264
  4. Test Duration: 4 hours
  5. Description of Test:  I will be making changes to the Local Controls PLC for Keck 1.  The two changes to be made are (1) ECR-91254 a modification to the baffle controls and logic to allow for a third operating mode without manually overriding the baffles; and (2) ECR- 91264 adding a network module to the PLC to allow remote troubleshooting.  The changes will involve reconfiguring the K1 Local Controls PLC.  Functional testing will consist of ensuring the baffles operate in all three desired modes, and ensuring network connectivity of the Local Controls PLC.  An interlock check will be required following the functional testing to verify all safety interlocks associated with the Local Controls PLC operate correctly.  I intend to make the modifications and test during the day, and use the engineering time in the early evening as a buffer for delays in the event I find we need to revert to the original configuration.  Chances are very good that the engineering time can be doubled up with another project in parallel as I expect testing to be completed during the day and general telescope use will further bolster the functionality of the system.
  6. Telescope/Instrument configuration required: The changes require the PLC to be powered down for reconfiguration and then powered up and reprogrammed.  The telescope will not be able to move while reconfiguring.  Following reconfiguration the telescope will be moving in Az and El.  Any Instrument can be installed.
  7. Plan for Data Reduction, Analysis, and Reporting:  The tests are simple in nature, and a checklist to ensure operational status will be produced.  An interlock check will be performed and filed in the standard manner.  A simple pass/fail summary will be sufficient.
  8. Preferred Dates of Observations:  Given the restrictions to telescope activities this would be a good candidate for a Sunday daytime changeover and evening test.  As mentioned previously, another test can be doubled up with this one.  As far as dates are concerned, Late February through March should be avoided as my wife and I are expecting the arrival of our second around that time.
