SPEC: Calibrations

There is no need for observers to take flat fields or arc lamp calibration images for the OSIRIS spectrograph. Wavelength calibration and pixel to pixel variations are accounted for in the Data Reduction Pipeline (DRP) via the Rectification Matrices.

IMAG: Dome Flats

Scripted Dome Flats:

Verify that telescope is at the dome flat position (dome and az are 90 degrees apart, el is 67)
Check with SA that PCU is out of beam
Define a calibration file
Run osimgTakeCals -file your_calibration_file

Default exposure time aims for 15,000 DN per image, SNR ˜ 180, source noise limited

While the dome flat lamp is adjustable, the OSIRIS imager typically uses it at full power (level = 0). The dome flat lamp power level can be between 0.0 and 20.0,
0 = brightest, 20 = faintest.

Manual Dome Flats:

Verify that telescope is at the dome flat position (dome and az are 90 degrees apart, el is 67)
Configure AO for dome flats:

In a napili or vm-osiris termnal: aohatch open

Turn on spec lamps via one of two methods:

Via lamp script: lamp dome 0
Via Dome Lamp Control GUI: right-click in background --> K1 Telescope Status Menu --> Dome lamp control

Take "lamps on" OSIRIS imager data
Turn off spec lamps via one of two methods:

Via lamp script: lamp dome off
Via Dome Lamp Control GUI: right-click in background --> K1 Telescope Status Menu --> Dome lamp control

Take "lamps off" OSIRIS imager data

Each "Lamps on/off" image is a median combination of 9 raw images
Normalized Flat = (Lamps On - Lamps Off) / median (Lamps On - Lamps Off)
The median DN quoted is the median pixel value BEFORE the flat was normalized
The median DN is in the header as "MEDIANPX"
