Welcome to the new Keck Instrument web pages guidelines!

The new web page design will eventually be ported to the entire Keck Instrument Web Cluster, so that you'll see consistent structure and look for all the instruments. The major novelties are:

• The Floating Menu on the right
  It is meant as a quick and easy navigation tool, always available close to where your mouse pointer usually stands. The Menu lists different links depending on whether you are inside the Keck domain or connecting from the outside. It is slightly different depending on the instrument, but it always allows quick links to the most popular pages (e.g .Weather, Instrument status, etc). On some particularly long pages, the floating menu has an appendix which lists relative links within the page. Under Unix it is slower than with a PC, but it is stil functional and pleasant. It always slides above the starry background, but if it cover the text area, just enlarge your browser window.
• Clickable Thumbnails.
Big pictures on web pages take up space. Separate pages showing the pictures are not very practical. We decided to try the clickable thumbnails. Everytime you see a thumbnail or a small picture click on it and it will expand in the page for you viewing pleasure. Click on it again and it will shrink back to a discreet size. If you want to print the picture, right click on it and select either "Print Picture" or "View Image". In the latter case you'll be able to print from the File...Print Menu of your browser.
• Pop-up notes.
Some of the links on the web pages react to your pointer going over them by popping out a "sticky" note with additional informations. The note stays visible till you pass your pointer over it.
• Styles details
The new web page design uses Cascading Style Sheets and JavaScript for special effects. You'll consistently see these style throughout the pages:
• Alert style: for warnings and important notes
• Enhance style: for text that it's meant to be emphasized
• Postit Style:for stand out messages, Postit! look.
• Red color code for LRIS red information
• Blue color code for LRIS blue information
• Green color code for general LRIS information
• How to print!.
The new web pages are designed with printing in mind. A printed version of a web page should include only the page content and title. The floating menu is hidden. Print a page by simply using the browser's printing option, typically found under the "File" pull down menu.
• Tips for viewing If your fonts are too small you might want to change your browser preferences. These web pages use alternate fonts 'arial' and 'sans serif' for UNIX browsers (PCs will display Verdana). In most UNIX browsers you can usually set your font size in the Preferences Menu, under category Appearance, Fonts. Set the Proportional font to San Serif, size 16 or bigger. You might want to try difference sizes and font selection for the San Serif font type.
