The software which controls the telescope allows a list of targets to be read in so that you only need to request an object by name with your observing assistant. The software requires a certain format though which is described here.

Once you have created a list (presumably before you arrived at Keck) you must put it in the appropriate place for your observing assistant to find it to load into the telescope pointing software. The list can be named anything but it needs to go below a particular directory. Fortunately, once the list is placed somewhere within the numbered account assigned to you for observing it is easy to check the formatting for the list and copy it to where it needs to go.

On the background menu, underneath Instrument Utilities select the item Install Starlist. You will be asked the name of the target list. If it is not in the numbered account's home directory, you will need to provide the path as well as name. After the list's syntax is checked, you will be asked the name of the subdirectory where the list will go. If a subdirectory already exists you can choose that. This may be the case if you or a collaborator have observed at Keck before. If not, you can provide a name (eg. your last name) and that subdirectory will be created.
