HIRES Power Up/Down Procedures

Powering Down HIRES

  1. Log on to lehoula as user hireseng.
  2. Check the 3.8-l dewar level:
  3. lehoula{hires}61: ln2

     DWRN2LV = 100.521973 percent full
     RESN2LV = 77.074471 percent full
     TEMPDET = -120.123032 degrees (C)

  4. Initiate a fill if DWRN2LV is less than 50% of capacity. This is most easily done from the menu entry HIRES Control Menu -> Initiate HIRES Dewar Fill.
  5. Disable the alarm cron jobs running under the kics account on waialea. This can be left to later if the power down is an emergency. Contact the HIRES support astronomer if help is needed with this step.
  6. Log on to 'hccdcrate'; use the menu entry Engineering -> Tip CCD Crate or:
  7. lehoula{hires}61:  telnet tserver1 3012
    or
    lehoula{hires}61: telnet hccdcrate
    Disable power to the CCD at the VxWorks prompt: Call the HIRES support astronomer for the login and the password if you do not know it.
    -> <bye
  8. Turn off the CCD power supply switch (the covered light switch under the UPS on the right-side shelves in the HIRES Electronics Enclosure).
  9. Turn off power to the main rack in the electronics enclosure. The power switch is the large toggle switch behind the hinged rear cover on the rack.
  10. Turn off power to the Varian ion pump power supply, located on the shelf above the UPS.

Powering UP HIRES

  1. Turn on CCD power (the light switch; see above).
  2. Turn on rack power (the rack toggle switch; see above).
  3. Turn on ion pump power (on the shelf; see above).
  4. Set the ion pump current gauge scale to 50 uA full-scale, and push the reset button down for 2 seconds to start the device. Verify that the gauge reading is dropping into this range, and that the light goes off; it may be necessary to start in a higher range. The operating current is less than 1 uA, so bring the scale down to 5 uA full-scale ultimately.
  5. Check dewar levels via keywords (ln2). Try and read a raw encoder value (s xdraw).
  6. Re-enable the alarm cron jobs running on waialea.
