ESI Diagnostic Checklist

Hi folks!

In case you have problems bringing up ESI & accessing keywords, here are some possible solutions Following is a summary of what was done today to get access to the relevant ESI keywords (IONPUMP, etc).

1. SYMPTOM:

You bring up Dashboard (ESI Display) from the 'esicon' menu and it seems to hang. The border comes up, but no display 'face,' and the console window says it can't read ESI keywords :

     INIT: Reading Layout File /kroot/data/esi/esi.dbd esi.tlib
     ERROR reading bin KW esi DWFILNAM: Can't read ESI dispatcher status: mread select timeout.
     ERROR reading bin KW esi SLMSKNAM: Can't read ESI dispatcher status: mread select timeout.

1. SOLUTION:

• a) If you are logged onto a summit workstation as esieng, use the workspace pulldown menu and select

  'Reset dispatcher 0'

  'Reset dispatcher 1'

• b) OR if you are not directly logged into a workstation as esieng, and only remotely logged in as esieng somewhere, type the command at the esieng prompt:

  ~esieng/bin/restart_dispatcher 0

  ~esieng/bin/restart_dispatcher 1

• c) Now see if you can read ESI keywords :

  show -s esi dwfilnam

  If you can, your dashboard should now come alive. Otherwise, kill it ('kill_em obsr') and restart it.

2. SYMPTOM:

You went thru the above step (1) and you still can't read keywords.

2. SOLUTION:

• a) Check the Lantronix connection, but you must first stop the ESI dispatcher tasks (if running) because they have the privileged connection to the port.

  Log in as esieng to koki:

  esi stop dispatcher2.0

  esi stop dispatcher2.1

• b) Check the Lantronix connection to see if you get feedback. (see The ESI Dispatchers and Galil Controllers)

  telnet 192.168.5.2

  If you don't get a response, power-cycle the Lantronix. If it was not power-cycled after the instrument was power-cycled, please power-cycle it now.

• c) Check the Lantronix telnet connection again (see The ESI Dispatchers and Galil Controllers)

  telnet 192.168.5.2

• d) If you have a good Lantronix connection, restart the dispatcher tasks as described in (1) above.
