Resetting ESI Lantronix

In some circumstances you may need to reset the ESI Lantronix terminal server. For example, you may be unable to ping the unit after an overall instrument power cycle. This problem is rare at night but can occur when the instrument is first powered up. For example, if the whole instrument is powered cycled to solve some other problem you might need to reset the Lantronix unit.

To get to the Lantronix you must open up an electronics bay and then close it afterwards, both of which are a bit tricky. However, locating the power switch of the Lantronix is pretty straightforward once you have the bay open. Below is a picture showing how to orient ESI so that the bay in question is on top and thus horizontal.

With ESI in this orientation you can use a stepladder to reach the electronic bay on top of the instrument. You will see two T-handles on the front corners of the electronics bays. These are captured and when un-done allow the cover to be lifted up. The rear of the cover (i.e., the end nearest the telescope) fits into a lip. When pulled up and pushed back a bit you will be able to see into the bay.

Note: Before removing the cover, take a moment to note how it looks while attached. Getting this cover back on may be the toughest part of the job. Note: the lid does not look "well attached" even when it is properly in place!

With the cover removed you can now see the Lantronix unit with the power rocker switch on its front, as shown below.
