Background
DEIMOS gratings are retained in place using four
pneumatically-operated clamps, numbered 1, 2, 4, and 5. Under
special circumstances, it might be desirable to operate the
indifidual clamps. A software procedure exists to do that,
described here . If the
software procedure is not adequate, or if the clamps need to be
operated at the summit, a hand paddle exists that can be used to
control the individual clamps.
Caveats
- These steps carry risk of damaging either the grating
clamps or the slider assembly, if the clamps are fired in
the wrong order or in the wrong position.
- These steps should only be performed by a WMKO Instrument
Technician/Engineer or Support Astronomer.
This is an image of the hand paddle
To access the connection point for the handpaddle, the front
panel that needs to be removed is the same that protects the air
pressure gauges. With the panel removed, you will see a
connector labeled "clamps control" and one labeled "clamps
sensors".
In this picture we are pointing at the "clamps control" connector.
Disconnect the control connector and replace it with the connector that comes from the hand paddle, as shown in the following two pictures.
With the paddle connected, you will be able to control the
individual clamps and the hatch. Remember to restore the control
connector when done with the manual operations.
