Between observing run warm-up and storage procedure.
As of 18 June 2007, NIRC will be warmed to ambient temps between observing runs. NIRC be cooled to operating temps starting 2-3 weeks before and observing run. Below are procedures to follow when warming and cooling NIRC.
  • Login to maili (instrument host) as nirc
  • Turn on level power to the detector:
     p3/det/lvlon
  • Change to the temperature log directory:
     cdlog
  • Monitor the temperatures incrementing every 5 min. using the command:
     tail -f TempLog.dat
and keep an eye on the temperatures are in Kelvins. Ambient temps are around 273 K.
  • When NIRC warms to -180 C (187 K), attach a vaccum pump to NIRC and begin pumping on the dewar.
  • Pump for at least two days
  • After ambient temperatures are reached, turn off level sensor.
     ~nirc/p3/det/lvloff
  • Continue to pump on the dewar for atleast two days.
  • Valve off the dewar and turn off the pump
  • Back fill slowly with dry Nitrogen.

Notes:

  • If the detector temperature exceeds 275 K cut power to the instrument (GNIRS law)
  • Warm up should take approximately 2 days after LN2 runs out.

Guidlines:

  • NIRC will be warmed to ambient temperatures if the time between runs is more than six weeks.
  • If the schedule indicates a warm-up is possible, NIRC will not be filled with cryo the day following the last night of observing.
  • 5 weeks before the run, place NIRC on the pump
  • 4 weeks before the run, warm fill with LN2
  • A few days before the run, fill inner can with LHe.
