Switching AO instruments

This webpage provides instructions on how to switch from a seeing limited instrument to an AO instrument and from one AO instrument to another.

To switch to an AO instrument,

  • Ask the Observing Assistant to select the AO instrument from the DCS GUI.
  • Run the night-time script from MAORI → Menu → Scripts → Night-time Setup.
To switch from one AO instrument to another, you can take the following shortcut: For example, to switch from NIRC2 to OSIRIS
  • Login to k2server as k2obs
  • Type fixInstr OSIRIS
  • Type caput -s k2:dcs:instrumeRbv   'OSIRIS'
  • Wait until the instrument reads 'OSIRIS' on FACSUM
  • Run the night-time script from MAORI → Menu → Scripts → Night-time Setup.
There is no need to dismiss and restart any tools!
N.B.: When using the standard method to switch from NIRSPEC to an AO instrument, you must completely shut down NIRSPEC to avoid rotator control conflict. This typically means that the NIRSPEC observer will have to wait until sun-rise to perform calibrations.
