W.M. Keck Observatory Observing at WMKO

Because the Keck Telescopes have many unique features, we have found that adequate planning and preparation in advance of observing runs pays great dividends in helping observers be most efficient and productive during their run. We urge all observers to follow the Planning Your Observing Program checklist below.

• Check the Instrument Manuals for details of using the instruments.
• Check the Ephemeris to see when your objects are accessible and when the moon is up.
• Check the Telescope Limits for planning when you can observe your objects. The limits are different for Keck I and Keck II.
• Review the unique features of the Keck Telescopes and Observatory
• Make an ascii Object Coordinate list before your run starts.
• Use the SKY program as a planning tool. Note that currently this is only available at Keck Observatory. Our very long-term wish is to some day make it available through the web.
• There is also an on-line planning tool available.
• Split Observing Night Considerations   New guidelines on how observers can help make the Support Astronomers more efficient on observing nights split between two observing groups.

• Slit Mask Files for those using multislit masks with LRIS or DEIMOS with less than 200 slits are required FOUR weeks prior to the observing run. Masks with greater than 200 slits are required EIGHT weeks prior to the observing run. Beginning with semester 2005B (1 August 2005) we will begin to charge for late submittal of mask designs unless sufficient scientific justification is provided. Please read the new Policy on slitmask incentives for further information.
• Check the DEIMOS/LRIS slitmask observer page for further instructions.

At Least Two Weeks Before Your Run:

• Lodging Reservation Form for those requiring housing at the Visiting Scientist Quarters or Hale Pohaku.
• LRIS/DEIMOS Configuration Form for those using either of these instruments.
• If any member of your team plans to participate remotely from the mainland, submit a request as described on the Mainland Observing Policy page
