Observing at WMKO - After Your Observing Run

Instructions for Authors
(for Papers & Press Releases)

Publication Acknowledgements

Observatory Acknowledgement

We request all scientific papers based on Keck data include the following acknowledgement (selecting the parenthetical words as appropriate) and suggest it appear as a footnote to the title of the paper itself:

Some of the data presented herein were obtained at Keck Observatory, which is a private 501(c)3 non-profit organization operated as a scientific partnership among the California Institute of Technology, the University of California, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. The Observatory was made possible by the generous financial support of the W. M. Keck Foundation.

Maunakea Site Acknowledgement

We further suggest to all authors they include the following statement in the acknowledgement section at the end of their published paper:

The authors wish to recognize and acknowledge the very significant cultural role and reverence that the summit of Maunakea has always had within the Native Hawaiian community. We are most fortunate to have the opportunity to conduct observations from this mountain.

Sharing Research Results with the Public and Media

The W. M. Keck Observatory strongly encourages observers to share their results with the public. A Communications Office has been established to support you in this effort. This office is available to discuss proposals, ideas and other items related to communications and outreach. Contact:

Press Releases and Other Media Events

Results which appear to be of special interest to the general public may be made the subject of a W. M. Keck Observatory (WMKO) press release to the news media. In the event your research organization wishes to join with WMKO in a simultaneous news release, arrangements may be made through the Communications Office as indicated above. Authors who publish data based fully or in part on data obtained at the WMKO are asked to provide acknowledgment in press releases and to news media reporters during interviews, including radio, television, Internet, telephone and video broadcasts. Please notify the Communications Office of these events.

    Citations of Your Papers

The Keck Observatory Bibliography lists refereed papers and PhD dissertations referencing data collected at the W. M. Keck Observatory. Please send citations for the WMKO Bibliography to Shelly Pelfrey, spelfrey@keck.hawaii.edu.
