K2 NIRSPEC Procedures 12 Jan 2001 Edition
114-36-11
If Cold Cycle Refrigeration CCR) system is running, i.e. NIRSPEC
is COLD, then follow ALL steps in the procedure.
If NIRSPEC is WARM and the CCRs are off, then
you may omit steps in blue
lettering.
WARNING:
Be expeditious while the CCRs are off: Turning off
the NIRSPEC CCRs provides approximately 10 min before the dewar vacuum
pressure reaches an unacceptably high value. At that point, either the
CCRs need to be powered on or a vacuum pump needs to be pumping on the
dewar. Otherwise NIRSPEC will lose vacuum completely and will need to be
warmed to ambient, pumped, and then cooled back to operating temperature,
a 15 day process.

switching telescope drive power on at the MCP, If the power comes on, there
are no Azimuth interlock handler faults present.
-
Switch the telescope drive power off.
MECHANICAL ROOM
WARNING:
Be expeditious: You have approx. 10 minutes on the
stopwatch to get NIRSPEC CCR lines hooked up on RT4 near the right Nas
Platform and the compressor started. Designate one person responsible for
calling out stopwatch readings and recording the dewar vacuum every minute.
If the vacuum inside the NIRSPEC dewar exceeds 1x10-3 Torr, check that
vacuum pump is on and that vacuum line is pumped down below 5x10-5 Torr,
then open the vacuum valve on NIRSPEC and begin pumping on dewar.
-
Shut off the NIRSPEC CCR compressor.
-
Immediately inform the crew in the AO house that
the compressors are off.
AO ENCLOSURE (in parallel with the following tasks in the Computer Room)
-
Immediately start the stopwatch and begin recording
dewar vacuum readings every minute.
-
Disconnect supply and return CCR lines from the NIRSPEC connect panel [NCP]
using the tools in the CCR tool kit.
-
Disconnect CCR power cable AOCCRAC from NCP, JS1.
-

-
Close AO door and clip shut.
COMPUTER ROOM (in parallel with the above tasks in the AO enclosure)
-
Disconnect CCR Power Cable PS1 from NIRSPEC Instrument Interconnect Panel
[IIP-NP Left Nasmyth Platform], JS1.
-
Connect CCR Power Cable PS1 to NIRSPEC Instrument Interconnect Panel [IIP-NP
Right
Nasmyth Platform], JS1.
TELESCOPE
WARNING: There is a telescope interlock on
the cable boom. If the boom is not properly stowed, the telescope will
not move at full speed. Do not release the boom until the telescope
is lined up Right Nasmyth to RT4.
-
Rotate telescope in azimuth to the RIGHT, to AZ=193.7 degrees to line
up Nas Deck handler position RT4 with the Right Nas Platform NIRSPEC
focus.
RIGHT NASMYTH DECK
-
Unlock the cable boom deadbolt, located at the base of the boom.
-
Release the cable ties to create slack in the cables.
-
Connect supply and return CCR lines from boom to the NIRSPEC connect panel
[NCP] using the tools in the CCR tool kit.
-
Connect CCR power cable PS1 on boom to NCP, JS1.
MECHANICAL ROOM
-
Power on NIRSPEC CCR compressor. Verify
the gauge pressure on the compressor is 128 PSI.
-
Stop stopwatch and note the time and dewar vacuum
for entry in the SIAS.
RIGHT NASMYTH DECK
-
Note that once the CCR compressor is turned on, the
CCR pressure gauges on NIRSPEC should read 315 to 325 PSI on the supply
line and 125 to 140 PSI on the return line. Oscillation in the pressure
is normal as long as the readings fall within the range specified.
-
Remove Right Nas Platform kinematic mount cover plates.
-
Monitor the NIRSPEC dewar vacuum. When it drops below
1x10-3 Torr, close the dewar valve if necessary, and disconnect the vacuum
pump. Put a blank off on the NIRSPEC inlet port.
-
Unplug the vacuum guage from the extension cord/power
strip and plug it into a NIRSPEC commercial AC power outlet on NCP.
-

the boom cables and boom rotation. The handler will stop automatically
over the kinematic mounts.
RIGHT NASMYTH PLATFORM
-
Jack NIRSPEC down on to the kinematic mounts by pressing and holding the
"down" button on the side of the handler. Monitor the lift pads on the
module handler. They should lift slightly off of the handler frame, then
stop automatically. If they fail to stop, release the "down" button. If
the screws drive too far it could damage the lift mechanism. Additionally,
monitor the front screw as it drives down into the kinematic mount. Ensure
that it is seating properly in the hole. Picture
-
Disconnect the handler power from the connector at RT4 on the Dec, and
retract the cable back into the takeup reel on the handler cart.
