NIRC Computers
There are four classes of computers of interest to observers: the instrument computer, which runs the instrument, a data taking computer, in front of which you sit while observing, one or more data reduction computers, on which you can carry out quick look or more sophisticated data reduction, and "other computers," which basically means all other computers not in the first three classes.

The instrument computer for NIRC is maili. The data taking and data reduction computers will differ whether you are observing from the summit or from HQ.

From HQ, the data taking computer is haleiwa. The data reduction computer is papahaku.

From the summit, the data taking computer is honolii, and the data reduction computer can be either lanikai or hanalei.

If you are in Waimea, a link is provided showing which computers are which, and giving a brief description of each.

Cross Mounting Disks

Disks of the form /sdataxxx, where xxx can be any one, two, or three digit series, can be accessed from any computer, whether at HQ, HP, or the summit, by prepending "/s" in front of the name: /s/sdataxxx.

NIRC data in particular is written on disks attached to maili, and numbered /sdata30 through /sdata36 and /sdata300 through /sdata311.

To find a scratch disk, type "scratchdisks" at a shell prompt. This should report back a list of all summit and HQ scratch disks, to which computer they are attached, and how much space is available on each. All /scratch disks could be wiped clean after a short time period; if you want to keep data reductions done on these machines you should back them up as soon as you can.

Data reduction disks can be cross-mounted by prepending either "/h" or "/s", if the disk resides at HQ or the summit, respectively. For example, to mount a papahaku scratch disk from haleiwa (both computers at HQ), one would type "cd /h/scratch1", as /scratch1 is on papahaku.
