Following are instructions for running HIRES and its utilities from a Waimea workstation. 1. On the computer workstation 'lumahai', log in under your assigned user account. 'Openwindows' will start automatically. 2. Most of the desired utilities can be started with pull-down menus. To bring up the menues, press the right mouse button when the pointer is in blue (background) space. 3. There is an entry 'HIRES Tools (non-makua)': access this menu by sliding the pointer towards the arrow. 4. The available tools are the following: Help-Mosaic Set of documents describing instrument usage. Start Up Displays the instrument control software on your workstation. DO NOT RUN THIS unless you will be fully operating HIRES. Shut Down Shuts down the control software; run this after you are through operating HIRES. Facilities Starts up the large colored display of the telescope status Summary on the third screen. Echelle Starts up the echelle simulator on the right (0.0) screen. Simulator Echelle Starts up the echelle simulator on the left (0.1) screen. Simulator #2 s/n simulator Starts up an xterm with the S/N simulator running. xhires Starts up a copy of 'xhires', the instrument stage controller, (simulate) in simulate mode. You can write setups in this mode. xhires Starts up a copy of 'xhires'; it will be active and will display the current state of the instrument; USE CAUTION. Guider Will start up an eavesdrop display of the summit display. Eavesdrop You will have to notify the observing assistant to enable the display from his/her interface. Guider Starts up eavesdrop display on the left display. Eavesdrop #2 Guider Properly shuts down the guider eavesdropping session. Eavesdrop Stop Telescope Brings up an 'xshow' of various telescope properties. Parameters compass Shows the orientation of the guider field in az/el or ra/dec. roses Exposure Starts an xshow of exposure parameters Parameters Xpose Displays a copy of 'xpose', the camera exposure user interface. This display will be active; USE CAUTION. Saoimage Brings up a copy of saoimage to examine LRIS images, right screen. Saoimage #2 Brings up a copy of saoimage to examine LRIS images, left screen.
