Using the right mouse button in blue space on any Keck sun workstation will
bring up two submenu possibilites:
"HIRES Summit Tools": Use this menu when running Hires from `makua' only.
"HIRES Remote Tools": for running Hires from ANY other workstation.
The `Hires Summit Tools'
Help-Mosaic: what this is
Start Up: starts up Hires user-interface software
Shut Down: self explanatory; run after observing
echelle simulator: the Hires echelle format simulator: START THIS FIRST
for proper color table allocation, if it is run on the same display as the Hires
control software
s/n simulator: the Hires signal/noise simulator
xhires: Graphical Display for Spectrograph
Control
xpose: Graphical Display for Exposure Control
Telescope: an xshow of various keywords relevant to observing
compass roses: showing orientation of sky relative
to guider
The "Hires Remote Tools"
Help-Mosaic: what this is
Start Up: starts up Hires user-interface software
Shut Down: self explanatory; run after observing
echelle simulator: the Hires echelle format simulator: START THIS FIRST
for proper color table allocation, if it is run on the same display as the Hires
control software
s/n simulator: the Hires signal/noise simulator
xhires: Graphical display for spectrograph
control; remotely, it runs in simulate mode only, for setting up 'go'
scripts
Guider Eavesdrop: brings up a local guider display
Guider Eavesdrop Stop: properly stops guider display software
Telescope: an xshow of various keywords relevant to observing
compass roses: showing orientation of sky relative
to guider
Irregularities
1. When 'echelle' is run from remote tools on a summit workstation, the printer
variable will be set for HP. To avoid this, 'xhost +makua' from your host,
rlogin to makua, 'setenv DISPLAY hostname:0', and run the program by typing
'echelle'.
2. When 'echelle' is run from the pull-down menus, the *.set and 'kics' files
will be written to the user home directory. The 'xhires' tool 'go' only
reads 'kics' setups from the subdirectory setups/. Thus you will need to
copy your 'kics' setups to this directory. Note that the next release of
'echelle'
will only write out two keywords to 'kics' files: echangl and xdangle;
the utility of writing 'go-kics' files from echelle will then intentionally
fade away.
3. It is intended that all remote tools will work from the two-headed display
'honolii'. Currently, it is suggested that one does not run the spectrograph on
'honolii'. However, all other remote tools will run there; in particular,
guider eavesdropping and running 'echelle' are encouraged.
