ESI Alarms

A number of cron jobs run on kanaha as esieng that watch the health of ESI systems. When a problem or potential problem is seen, e-mail is sent to a list of e-mail addresses. The current cron jobs are:

File Description Action
dewar.watch Monitors the detector temperature. If it gets higher than -110 C, a warning is sent out. Check to see whether the ion pump is on, and whether the dewar has enough liquid nitrogen. If hold time on the dewar is less than normal, the vacuum may be going soft, and the dewar will require pumping. If the ion pump keeps turning off, again the vacuum may be going soft, or the ion pump controller may be malfunctioning.
ionpump.watch Monitors the ion pump. If the ion pump state cannot be read, e-mail is sent out. If the ion pump is found to be off, a different e-mail is sent out. Check power to the ion pump controller, the voltage setting (it should be 5 keV), and check to see whether the controller appears to be working. If it is, power cycle the CCD electronics and possibly reboot the CCD computer. If the ion pump will not stay on, suspect a soft vacuum or a fault controller.
inst.master Monitors the ion pump controller, glycol flow and temperatures, electronics box temperatures, and the lamp enclosure temperature. If any temperatures are too high, check the glycol lines (both in and out of the instrument). Carefully feel the electronics boxes to determine whether they are indeed hot. Check fans to make sure the fans in the boxes are working properly.

Turning alarms on and off

You can turn the alarms off manually by logging onto kanaha as esieng and typing "disable_crons". What this really does is point links in /u/esieng/links to a "dummy" file that does nothing.

To temporarily disable alarms, type "cron_sleep xxx", where "xxx" is the number of minutes you want the alarms to sleep. They will automatically be turned back on after the specified time. If you don't specify "xxx", the sleep will be for two hours (120 minutes).

You can also turn the alarms off for two hours by using the OpenWindows desktop menu to select "Engineering -> Put alarms to sleep (2 hrs.)". This would typically be used to turn the alarms off while installing or removing ESI from the telescope.

To reenable alarms manually, type "enable_crons". This will reestablish the links in /u/esieng/links.

Note that you should not have to change the cron table on kanaha in order to disable and reenable these alarms. If you want to disable only one alarm, you can link the appropriate file in /u/esieng/links to "dummy" in that directory.
